Florida motorcyclist killed when car turns into his path

February 1, 2014

One of the most common excuses that drivers make after they hit a motorcycle is that they never saw the bike coming. Due to some driver's lack of attention, many riders become the victim of a motorcycle accident, even when they themselves are being attentive and following the rules of the road.A Florida man was killed recently while riding his motorcycle on the highway. It appears that his death was caused by a motorist who either failed to see him, or did not respect his right of way. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the victim was travelling west on State Road 54, behind a van. Coming the other way was a car driven by a 22-year-old woman. The car reached an intersection and stopped, as the driver waited to turn left. She waited for the van to pass, but did not yield to the motorcycle, troopers said. Instead, she turned into the victim's path, so that he could not avoid a collision with its passenger side. The victim, 20, was thrown from his motorcycle. The impact was so violent that he died at the scene, despite wearing a helmet.Troopers expected to charge the car's driver in connection with the accident, which took place shortly after 7 a.m. on Jan. 29. It will be interesting to see if glare from the sun will be named a factor. Even if it was, the driver likely should have expected that driving eastward that time of morning could cause the sun to shine in her eyes, and plan accordingly, for instance by wearing sunglasses.
