Wrongful death trial over Michael Jackson's death continues

May 30, 2013

Losing a loved one can be one of the most difficult events in anyone's life. This time can be even more difficult if that loss is due to the negligence or mistake of another. In those cases, the family may have the right to file a wrongful death claim. Michael Jackson's family is currently facing that reality. His family recently filed a wrongful death suit in Los Angeles against the concert promoter AEG Live. The family is claiming that the promoter did not thoroughly investigate the doctor hired to help and treat Mr. Jackson. This doctor was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in Mr. Jackson's death. AEG Live is claiming that it was Mr. Jackson who played the biggest part in choosing the doctor. So far, the jury in this case has heard about the contracts relating to Mr. Jackson and the doctor. These contracts also involved Mr. Jackson's estate. The jury was also exposed to the inner workings of a mega-concert including the budget, insurance and contracts involved. The anticipated next steps in the case are an investigation and interrogation of AEG Live executives. Mr. Jackson's makeup artist is also expected to take the stand to help fill in what Mr. Jackson's health was like in his final days. If a family suspects the loss of their loved one is due to the negligence of another, that family may have the right to seek compensation for their loss. Florida has a two year statute of limitations on filing a claim so as difficult as it may be, legal action must be considered soon after a loved ones death. The potential compensation may cover funeral expenses, loss of future earnings and emotional distress. Source: TBO, "Civil trial over Jackson's death focuses on AEG," May 25, 2013
