Woman's family files wrongful death suit in PA

April 24, 2013

Most Florida residents have relatives or others in their lives they consider "loved ones." As such, almost anyone would admit that losing a loved one is often one of the most difficult events an individual could face. When a loved one's death was possibly a wrongful death, an already trying time can become unbearable.Wrongful death occurs if a loss of life is due to the negligence of another person. If this is the case, the family of the deceased may have the right to seek compensation for the loss of their loved one. A family in Pennsylvania recently filed a wrongful death claim against a Philadelphia doctor who performs abortions. The deceased was a refuge from Bhutan, seeking an abortion during her 19th week of pregnancy. Before coming to the United States in 2009, she lived in a refugee camp for 20 years. She died only a few months after arriving in the United States. She was allegedly killed by an overdose administered by the doctor's staff while waiting to have an abortion preformed by the doctor. The doctor gave her labor inducing drugs and painkillers, but she had to wait hours after getting the medication before seeing the doctor. The drugs were administered by unlicensed staff and the combination was lethal for her. Her family claims that she was not monitored, nor was resuscitation attempted when it was clear things were going wrong. The doctor is also charged with the death of seven other women and seven babies that were born alive. In the event that the doctor is held liable for the woman's death, compensation could be awarded to cover medical expenses, funeral costs, loss of companionship and emotional distress.Source: My Fox Tampa Bay, "Relatives describe women's death after PA abortion," Maryclaire Dale, April 16, 2013
